Entries are now closed for the 2022 John Henahan Writing Prize for Young Ophthalmologists.

The competition is open to ophthalmologists who are members of the ESCRS and aged 35 years or under on 1 January 2022. The winner of the prize will receive a €500 bursary and a specially commissioned trophy. The prize will be awarded during the ESCRS Video Competition Awards ceremony during the 40th Congress of the ESCRS in Milan, Italy in September.
The topic for the 800-word essay is: “What can the field of ophthalmology do to meet the pressing challenges of climate change, sustainability and social equity?”
On the cover sheet of your essay, please include the following information:
- Name (first and last)
- Date of birth
- Current address
- Current position
- Email address
- Telephone
- Title of essay
The judges will draw up an initial shortlist of the five best essays submitted and will then decide on the winning essay. The shortlisted essays and the winning essay will be published in EuroTimes, the official news magazine of the ESCRS.
The punctuation, syntax and grammar in the essay should reflect the high standards of material published in EuroTimes. For those for whom English is a second language, we strongly recommend showing your essay to a native speaker before submitting it. Please remember to keep your essay to 800 words or fewer.
The prize is named in honour of John F. Henahan, who edited EuroTimes from its inception in 1996 to 2001.
